THE WHITE REEF

Scientists predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fishes. We are experiencing the largest mass species extinction that our planet has suffered since the dinosaurs extinction and marine life is suffering the worst part due to its “invisibility”. We see the ravages of our actions on the terrestrial plane but it is not so easy for terrestrial beings like us to observe the decline of marine life beyond our shores. The great barrier reefs are on alert. Corals are home to 25% of marine life and without them many animal species could not survive. It is the fourth time in the last 25 years that we have witnessed the massive death of these due to high temperatures and acidification of the water, which translates into the whitening of their pigmentation and the loss of their characteristic colors that enrich our oceans.
To emphasize the situation, I decided to create these souvenir items and thus show that in a few years the bright colors of corals will not be known, there are already large coral reefs in which only 1% of the corals are healthy. Of the 2,300 km covered by the Australian Great Barrier Reef 1,500 km have been severely affected, leaving only a third partially healthy. In less time than we think, if we don’t act quickly, these white corals that I expose in my work will be the protagonists of a lifeless ocean, a cemetery of white tombstones.
